It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Ifunanya Nwangene, fondly known as Nanyah, who left us on January 31st, 2026 after a tragic snake bite incident in her Abuja residence. She was 26.
Nanyah was a remarkable talent, a soprano vocalist with the Amemuso Choir, a former contestant on The Voice Nigeria Season 3 in 2021, and a trained architect from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Her voice carried a rare blend of classical precision and emotional depth, moving effortlessly across opera, jazz, R&B and soul.
Those who heard her sing remembered the calm presence she brought to every note.
A Note on Integrity
At Nigerian Gospel Music Charts, we believe in honouring truth even in moments of grief. While Nanyah occasionally performed sacred classical pieces and was a member of a church choir, her primary musical identity was not gospel. She was a versatile vocalist exploring multiple genres, classical crossover, jazz standards, and contemporary R&B, while building a parallel career in architecture.
We share this not to diminish her gift, but to honour it accurately. Every voice is a divine endowment. Not every beautiful voice is assigned to the gospel genre and that is okay. God gifts artists for different spheres, and Nanyah’s contribution to Nigeria’s broader musical landscape mattered deeply.
Why This Loss Resonates
Her passing has stirred national conversation for painful reasons. Beyond the tragedy itself, it has spotlighted serious concerns about emergency healthcare access in Nigeria, particularly the availability of anti-venom and timely treatment for snake bite victims.
The Federal Medical Centre Abuja later clarified she suffered severe neurotoxic complications from the bite.
This is not just a celebrity story. It is a human story that touches thousands of Nigerians who face similar risks daily.
How We Respond
In this moment, our posture should be:
- Respect – for her life, her family’s grief, and the dignity of her memory
- Accuracy – not misrepresenting her musical assignment for clicks or relevance
- Compassion – extending prayers and support to her loved ones and the Amemuso Choir
- Reflection – allowing this loss to remind us of life’s fragility and the importance of valuing every gift while it is with us
Nanyah was more than a viral headline. She was someone’s daughter, friend, colleague, and sister in faith. She was an architect by day and a vocalist by calling a young woman building a life of purpose in multiple dimensions.
Her potential was vast. Her departure leaves a silence where music should have continued.
A Final Word
We do not chart her music at NGMC because it was not gospel in genre or primary intent. But we honour her humanity. We mourn the loss of a gifted daughter of Nigeria. And we join many in praying for her family as they navigate this unimaginable season.
May her soul rest in perfect peace.
May her family find comfort in the God of all comfort.
And may her story remind us to cherish the artists among us – not just their art, but their lives.
